The Spanish program at Saint Bernadette is designed to help students learn a second language while giving them an appreciation, understanding and exposure to Latin American culture. From kindergarten to fourth grade, the focus is primarily on expanding the students’ vocabulary, learning numbers and basic greetings. While they continue to expand their vocabulary, the main concentration in grades five through eight is grammar, learning verbs, and adjectives. All students utilize a grade-appropriate text. In kindergarten through fourth grade, we use the Viva el Espanol Learning System; fifth and sixth use Hola; and seventh and eighth use the ¿Qué Tal? textbook. Additionally, students practice their speaking skills by conversing with other students in Spanish, singing songs and even saying prayers in Spanish.
